Carolyn & Doug Hoare were the co-emcee's at the Toastmasters Spring Conference this Mother's Day weekend at the Coast Bastion Inn in Nanaimo. There were over 160 Toastmasters in attendance on May 9th, 10th, and 11th. This event occurs twice yearly in B.C., with this being the first such conference held in the city of Nanaimo since 1999. As this event mirrors exactly the VIR-PCA Crown Isle weekend festivities, Carolyn & Doug both missed their fellow Porsche Club friends entirely that weekend, even though Doug has been serving as the "Crown Isle 2008" Committee co-chair and Carolyn has been in charge of Registration, along with organizing the "Wayne Ayers Colouring Challenge" that precedes the Sunday Brunch.

Dave Nickel spent 3 weeks in Italy and took pics of every Porsche he saw. This is rare: a Hydrogen converted Boxster. He was doing 140kph when he took the pic and is surprised it’s not fuzzy.

ERNIE YAKIMOVICH is the Canadian Autocross Champion in the DM class. He and Ernie Kowal and Carl Latzel participated in the Championship in Pitt Meadows in September. Ernie place third in his class and Carl placed eight.

the Queen Alexandra European and Classic Car Show was the best ever! The numbers are yet to be tallied but unofficially, we have been able to donate over $37,000 to the kids and families of the Queen Alexandra Foundation.

VIR member Jeah Luc Lagan has been racing in the Hornet Class at Western Speedway on Wednesday nights last summer and was featured in Time Colonist sports section. Some of us have been going out to support Jean Luc and others that we know and encourage you to do the same next year! There is some pretty fearless brotherly competition between Jean Luc, and his brother Phil, and more recently, their brother Peter! Rumour has it that you might know one or two women in the newly formed Bumble Bee class this year!

We are trying a new idea on our news page. Each month we would like to profile a club member; this month we are introducing Autocross Al.
This is an old bio but very informative nevertheless. It will give you an idea of what we are looking for. Please submit bios and other interesting tidbits so we can better get to know our members.

Click on the photo to see Brad Blaney's pictoral essay on how NOT to paint your car! Or should this be on the Concours or Tech page?

Andrew Jackson submitted this photo, taken through his driver's window, on a road trip to Kennewick WA last September in his Boxster.

Droppings, or After the Detailing Clinic
Ernie Kowal, of Shiney Car Products, conducted a very successful clinic at European Specialty Cars in Nanaimo. While Ernie showed everyone how to clean and wax, Wayne checked out the cars on the hoist. Thanks to Wayne and Hazel Ayers for their hospitality.
AUTOCROSS CASH BACK PROGRAMME is a new innovation in our Autocross Programme
Insurance Requirements for anyone organizing a Regional event You need to get insurance for every moving car event organized by the Region. Please forward to me the date, time, start and finish locations. Also get the correct names of any persons or company whose property may be involved in the event. If it's a tour, breakfast run, evening drive, autocross, rally or what ever, then provide me a brief description of where the event starts, where it's going and where it finishes.
There is a insurance requirement for all participants to sign a waiver prior to starting the event. Pads of waiver forms are available from the insurance chair. After the event is over the waiver forms must be returned to the insurance chair because they have to be kept for two years in case there is a late claim we don't know about.
The sooner you get the information regarding your event to the insurance chair the better. The policy for the event will be ordered and you will be provided with a copy of the policy. Check with any property owners if they need a copy of the insurance and one will be sent to them. For more information contact Ernie Kowal 477-8914
COLLECTOR PLATES:We get inquiries from members regarding collector and antique vehicles. Here is the link to ICBC that explains whether or not your car might qualify: http://www.icbc.com/registration/reg_spec_veh_coll_veh.asp
Several members and friends of VIR meet for coffee early on Sunday mornings. We started at Starbuck's but moved to Francelli's Coffee 4444 West Saanich Road, Victoria, in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre, due to our increasing numbers! This is a good time to make new friends and show off our cars. Come and join us! Cars  Enthusiasts

On an overcast Sunday, 26 members and spouses ventured up to Arbutus Ridge Golf Club for what is becoming an annual Trek for a pre-Valentines Brunch. We enjoyed fabulous food from a selection of tables of seafoods (including Alaskan King Crab legs!), salads, desserts and fruits & juices as well as fresh waffles, custom omelettes, roasts of ham and beef, bacon, sausages and Eggs Bennies. The Club provided a couple of roses to each of the ladies attending and there was lots of time to chat and mingle with everyone. A few hardy souls even brought out their Porsches! An enjoyable time was had by all.

Ernie Yakimovich was our Member of the Year for 2007. We appreciate his contributions and participation in all aspects of VIR, particularly the Queen Alexandra European and Classic Car Picnic.

By all reports Crown Isle was a huge success! Look at the photos and plan to attend next year!
